Do You Suffer From Disconnection Syndrome?

Uncategorized Feb 17, 2023

This week I discovered that my book has a soul mate:  Brain Wash.

Brain Wash is to brain health what 21st-Century Guide to Living Cancer-Free Naturally is to immune health. While each book addresses their own primary concern, they both present similar solutions to a larger objective: health of the total body and mind, and a happy spirit.  And, happily, this is not an unattainable goal.

Father and son authors David Perlmutter, MD and Austin Perlmutter, MD get it.  They get how contemporary life, despite the endless opportunities it affords us, is messing with us nonetheless.  Big time.

Worrisome data confirms this:

  • Rising suicide rates (56% increase between 2007 and 2016 among adolescents in the U.S.)
  • Depression (400% increase in antidepressant prescriptions in the U.S. since the 1990s)
  • 25% insomnia rate among adults.

That's just a small taste of the serious 21st-century issues.

The authors call it “disconnection syndrome”, defined as a state of separation from sustainable happiness and characterized by mindless activity, loneliness, chronic inflammation, instant gratification, narcissism, poor relationships, chronic stress and impulsivity.

Disconnection syndrome might even have more to do with cancer than one might at first realize.  The brain affects the body.  The body affects the mind.  The mind and its emotional states affects the body… and so it goes.

In their well laid-out Ten-Day Brain Wash reset plan for brain and body they offer hope and help through diet, sleep, exercise, meditation, nature exposure, gratitude, and careful attention to relationship and digital interactions.

In other words – “water, sunshine, rest, air, exercise, and diet”.   If you’ve read my book, this approach should sound familiar.  Yes, the same approach to preventing or recovering from cancer can also balance and build a better (read healthier) brain.

The point is, the fundamentals to overcoming most health issues are the same, whether we’re talking about addressing cancer or Alzheimer’s – or just about any other malady, including those of disconnection.    It always comes down to those basics, found within nature and within ourselves.  And by applying a holistic approach, we can reconnect with ourselves and the world around us.  We can get closer to becoming whole.
